William Tan

William Tan, cello (Hinsdale, IL), is a student of Hans Jorgen Jensen at Northwestern’s Bienen School of Music. He has soloed with numerous orchestras including in performances of Dvorak’s Cello Concerto in B Minor with the Camerata Orchestra of New Jersey and Lakeview Orchestra of Chicago, Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E Minor with the Oistrakh Symphony of Chicago and Kishwaukee Symphony, and Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No.1 with the DuPage Symphony Orchestra. William received third prize at the 2021 Klein International String Competition, including the Weiss Prize for Best Performance of the Commissioned Work. His other solo wins include Gold Prize at the 2021 Camerata Artists International Competition and first place at the 2020 MTNA National String Competition. Most recently, William was a finalist in the Johansen 2022 International Competition. A passionate chamber musician, William is a member of the Aster Trio and is coached by Desiree Ruhstrat. With the trio, William won the 2022 Rembrandt Young Artists Chamber Music Competition and the 2022 Chicago National Chamber Music Competition. William has been a featured guest on “From the Top” and has attended Orford Music Academy, Music@Menlo, and Meadowmount. A junior at the University of Chicago Laboratory School, William is an assistant editor of the U-High Midway, a varsity debater, competitive chess player, and an avid skier.
