Nigel Thean

Nigel Thean, cello (Petaling Jaya, Malaysia), was a prize winner at the 2018 International Karl Davidov Competition in Latvia. Awarded a full scholarship to study at Wells Cathedral School in England with Penny Driver, Nigel went on to complete his Bachelor and Master degree with Leonid Gorokhov at the Hochschule für Musik in Hannover, and currently studies with Thomas Demenga at the Hochschule für Musik in Basel, Switzerland. A keen chamber musician, Nigel plays in various ensembles and has given recitals across Europe and Asia. He has featured in a number of chamber music festivals such as IMS Prussia Cove. Hitzacker Sommerliche Musiktage, Rome Chamber Music Festival, Mendelssohn on Mull, and Verbier. His discography includes recordings of Georg Katzer‘s “Lieder und Songs” for piano, voice and cello for DeutschlandFunk and Neos, and Saint Saens’s “Mon cœur s’ouvre à ta voix” for NDR. He has collaborated with many eminent musicians, including Pieter Schoemann, Ulf Schneider, Lawrence Dutton, members of the Doric String Quartet, the Hagen Quartet, and others. Recently, Nigel co-founded the piano trio "Trio Venere," with pianist Daniel Borovitzky and violinist Gaia Trionfera.
