FACULTY & GUEST ARTISTS * denotes guest artist Violin: Curtis Macomber Curtis Macomber, violin (Riverdale, N.Y.), is a versatile artist equally at home with repertoire ranging from Bach to Babbitt. He is a former member of the New World String Quartet, with which he toured internationally for many years. He is a founding member of the Apollo Trio. Curtis serves on the faculties of the Juilliard and Manhattan Schools of Music, and has taught at the Tanglewood and Taos festivals. Past Yellow Barn participant (2001-2007) Robert Mann * Robert Mann, violin (New York, N.Y.), is known worldwide as founding first violinist of the Juilliard String Quartet, which he led for 51 years. He currently maintains an active career as soloist, composer, conductor and teacher. He is a Visiting Professor at the Juilliard School, a member of the Board of Directors of the New York Philharmonic, and President of the Walter W. Naumburg Foundation. Past Yellow Barn participant (2002-2005, 2007) Anthony Marwood Anthony Marwood, violin (Peasemarsh, England), is Artistic Director of the Irish Chamber Orchestra and a member of the Gramophone Award-winning Florestan Trio. He was named Instrumentalist of the Year at the 2006 Royal Philharmonic Society Awards. Anthony has recently appeared as soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the London Philharmonic, and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, among others. Past Yellow Barn participant (2000-2007) Violaine Melançon Violaine Melançon, violin (Baltimore, Md.), is a founding member of the Naumburg Award-winning Peabody Trio, with which she performs internationally. She serves on the violin and chamber music faculties of the Peabody Conservatory. She was a winner, with the Nisaika Quartet, of the Eighth International String Quartet Competition in Evian, France, and, with the Knopp-Melançon Duo, of the USIA Artistic Ambassadors Award. She is a recipient of the 1984 Prix d’Europe. Violaine has recorded on the CRI, New World Records, and Artek labels. Past Yellow Barn participant (1998-2007) Donald Weilerstein Donald Weilerstein, violin (Brookline, MA), is a member of the Weilerstein Duo and the Weilerstein Trio. He was founding first violinist of the Cleveland String Quartet, with which he toured internationally for many years. He serves on the faculties of the New England Conservatory and the Juilliard School, and is a former faculty member of the Cleveland Institute and the Eastman School. He has appeared at Aspen, Ravinia, Marlboro, Mostly Mozart, Berlin, Israel, Salzburg, and Luzern festivals, among others. Past Yellow Barn participant (2001-2007) Viola: Maria Lambros Maria Lambros, viola (Baltimore, MD), is a former member of the Mendelssohn, Meliora, and Ridge String Quartets. She has been a Grammy nominee and winner of the Naumburg Chamber Music Award and Europe’s Diapason d’Or. She has performed with the Guarneri, Cleveland, Juilliard, Brentano, Borromeo, and Orion Quartets, with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and at the Spoleto and Aspen festivals, among others. She is on the faculty of Peabody Conservatory. Past Yellow Barn participant (2000-2007) Nicholas Mann Nicholas Mann, viola/violin (Ossining, N.Y.), is a founding violinist of the Mendelssohn String Quartet, now in its 29th year. He currently serves on the faculty of the Juilliard School and co-chairs the string department at the Manhattan School of Music. He is a former faculty member at Harvard, the Hartt School, and the North Carolina School for the Arts. A former trustee of Yellow Barn, Nicholas has participated in the Ravinia, Aspen, Mostly Mozart, Chamber Music West, and Santa Fe festivals. Past Yellow Barn participant (1999-2007) Katherine Murdock Katherine Murdock, viola (College Park, Md.), is a member of the Los Angeles Piano Quartet and a former member of the Mendelssohn String Quartet. She has toured with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Music from Marlboro, and the Boston Chamber Music Society, and has collaborated with members of the Vermeer, Emerson, and Cleveland Quartets. She serves on the faculties of the University of Maryland and SUNY Stony Brook. Past Yellow Barn participant (1998-2007) Roger Tapping Roger Tapping, viola (Swampscott, MA), is a former member of the Grammy Award-winning Takács Quartet, with which he toured worldwide and which is also a two-time winner of the Gramophone Chamber Music Recording of the Year Award. He is a former member of Britain’s Allegri Quartet. Roger serves on the faculties of the New England Conservatory and the Longy School of Music and is a Yellow Barn trustee. Past Yellow Barn participant (2003-2007) Cello: Natasha Brofsky Natasha Brofsky, cello (Swampscott, MA), is the cellist of the Naumburg Award-winning Peabody Trio, which tours regularly throughout the U.S., Canada, and England, has recorded for CRI, New World, and Artek, and is ensemble-in-residence at the Peabody Conservatory. She is a former member of the string trio Opus 3 and the Serapion Ensemble, and has performed as a guest with the Takács, Cassatt, and Norwegian Quartets, among others. Natasha serves on the faculty at the New England Conservatory. Past Yellow Barn participant (2001-2007) Steven Doane * Steven Doane, cello (Rochester, NY), is well known in the U.S. and abroad as a soloist, recitalist, and chamber artist. He is a former member of the Naumburg Award-winning New Arts Trio and is former principal cellist of the Milwaukee Symphony and the Rochester Philharmonic. He holds the Eisenhart Award for Excellence in Teaching from the Eastman School of Music, where he has taught since 1981, and serves as a visiting professor at the Royal College of Music in London. Jean-Michel Fonteneau Jean-Michel Fonteneau, cello (San Francisco, CA), is a founding member of the Ravel String Quartet, winner of two prizes at the Evian International String Quartet Competition, and the recipient of Les Victoires de la Musique Classique Award for best French chamber music ensemble. He has taught at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Lyon, France, and is on the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory. Past Yellow Barn participant (2000-2004, 2006-2007) Bonnie Hampton Bonnie Hampton, cello (New York, NY), was a winner, with her late husband, pianist Nathan Schwartz, and the Francesco Trio, of the Naumburg Chamber Music Award. She is a past participant at the Casals and Marlboro Festivals, among others. She has performed with the Juilliard, Guarneri, Cleveland, and Budapest Quartets, and has served as President of Chamber Music America. Bonnie serves on the faculty of the Juilliard School and is a Yellow Barn trustee. Past Yellow Barn participant (1999-2007) Michael Kannen Michael Kannen, cello (Baltimore, MD), was a founding member of the Naumburg Award-winning Brentano String Quartet and a former member of the Meliora String Quartet and the Figaro Trio. He has performed with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and is a member of the Apollo Trio and the New York Philomusica. Michael chairs the chamber music department at Peabody Conservatory and is a Yellow Barn trustee. Past Yellow Barn participant (2000-2007) Paul Katz Paul Katz, cello (Boston, MA), was cellist of the Cleveland Quartet, with which he had a long international career spanning four continents, more than 2,500 appearances, and 70 recordings. His recent accolades have included the Richard M. Bogomolny Award, recognizing a lifetime of distinguished service to the field of chamber music. He currently serves on the faculty of the New England Conservatory. Past Yellow Barn participant (2005-2007) Piano: Christina Dahl Christina Dahl, piano (Cleveland Hts., OH), is active as a teacher and recitalist. She is a former USIA Artistic Ambassador. Christina serves as director of chamber music and faculty at SUNY Stony Brook, and is a former faculty member and piano department chair at the Eastman School of Music. She has taught at Aspen and Ravinia, held fellowships at Tanglewood and Banff, and has been featured on National Public Radio’s “Performance Today”. Peter Frankl Peter Frankl, piano, is a soloist, chamber artist, recitalist and visiting professor at Yale University. Gilbert Kalish * Gilbert Kalish, piano (New York, NY), served for nearly three decades as Chairman of Faculty at the Tanglewood Music Center. He has been a featured guest at many festivals including Ravinia, Banff and Marlboro. A longtime collaborator with the soprano, Jan DeGaetani, he now performs regularly with soprano Dawn Upshaw, cellists Joel Krosnick and Timothy Eddy, and other leading artists. He currently serves as Professor and Head of Performance Activities at SUNY Stony Brook. Past Yellow Barn participant (1999-2007) Seth Knopp Seth Knopp, piano (Baltimore, MD), is Artistic Director of Yellow Barn and a founding member of the Naumburg Award-winning Peabody Trio. He is founder and co-director of the Yellow Barn Young Artists Program. As a member of the Knopp-Melançon Duo, he was a winner of the USIA Artistic Ambassador Competition, which resulted in tours throughout Europe, the Far East, the Middle East, and Japan. He is a member of the Peabody Conservatory piano and chamber music faculties. Seth has recorded on the CRI, Analekta, New World Records, and Artek labels. Past Yellow Barn participant (1998-2007) Vivian Hornik Weilerstein Vivian Hornik Weilerstein, piano (Brookline, MA), is a member of the Weilerstein Duo and the Weilerstein Trio, and is a frequent collaborator with many eminent artists. She serves on the piano and chamber music faculties of the New England Conservatory, where she also directs the professional piano trio training program. She is a former faculty member of the Cleveland Institute and the Eastman School. Vivian has participated in the Marlboro, Aspen, Verbier, and Kneisel Hall festivals, among others. Past Yellow Barn participant (2001-2007) Winds: Mark Hill, oboe Mark Hill, oboe (College Park, MD), is principal of the National Philharmonic and a frequent guest artist with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He is a member of the New York Chamber Symphony and Sylvan Winds. He serves on the faculty of the University of Maryland. He has performed with the Guarneri Quartet and the New York Philharmonic, and tours frequently with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Mark is a Grammy-nominated English horn player. Past Yellow Barn participant (1998-2007) Alan Kay, clarinet Alan Kay, clarinet (Leonia, NJ), is a member of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. He is Artistic Director of the New York Chamber Ensemble, a member of Hexagon and Windscape, and frequent performer with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He is principal clarinetist of New York’s Riverside Symphony. Alan serves on the faculties of the Juilliard School and the Manhattan and Hartt Schools of Music. Past Yellow Barn participant (2001-2007) Stephen Stirling, French horn Stephen Stirling, French horn, is a member of the Weilerstein Duo and Weilerstein Trio. He is on the chamber music faculty and director of professional trio training program, New England Conservatory Voice: Lucy Rowan Mann, narrator * Lucy Rowan Mann, narrator (New York, N.Y.), is an actress and narrator who performs regularly with her husband, violinist Robert Mann, frequently in his original compositions. She is Secretary and Assistant Treasurer of the Walter W. Naumburg Foundation. Past Yellow Barn participant (2002-2005, 2007) Susan Narucki, soprano Susan Narucki, soprano (Nutley, N.J.), well known as a recitalist and soloist, is a familiar presence in the world’s major concert halls and opera houses. She recently made her Netherlands Opera debut creating the role of Catherina Bolnes in Writing to Vermeer. She also performed the role of Pat Nixon in excerpts from John Adams’ Nixon in China with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and premiered Scriabin’s Mysterium: Humanity with the San Francisco Symphony. Susan’s extensive discography includes a 2001 Grammy Award-winning disc of works by George Crumb and a Cannes Award-winning CD for Best Recording of Works by a Living Composer. Past Yellow Barn participant (2000-2007) William Sharp, baritone William Sharp, bariton, is a recitalist and recording artist who performs with major orchestras. He is also on the faculty at the Peabody Conservatory. Composers: Stephen Coxe Stephen Coxe, composer (Madison, WI), is a recipient of Aaron Copland, Artspace, ASCAP, Composers’ Guild, Meet the Composer, and National Association of Composers Awards and a BAEF Fellowship. He has received commissions from American Voices, Musicians Accord, The Peabody Trio, Sequitur, and others, and has held residencies at Yaddo, Ragdale, and Virginia Center. He has directed programs for young composers at Peabody Conservatory, the Walden School, and the Putney School. Past Yellow Barn participant (1999-2007) Leon Kirchner Leon Kirchner, composer is a Pultizer Prize winner, recipient of a Freidheim Award and two New York Music Critics' Awards, and received commissions from the Ford, Fromm and Koussevitzky Foundations and the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, among many others. Ensemble-in-residence: The Peobody Trio The Peobody Trio, winner, 1989 Naumburg Chamber Music Award; tours internationally; ensemble-in-residence, Peabody Conservatory. Feldenkrais: Aliza Stewart Aliza Stewart, Feldenkrais practitioner (New York, NY), is a teacher and pianist who works with musicians to help them overcome performance-related injuries and find increased freedom of expression. She has taught Feldenkrais at The Peabody Institute, the Marlboro Music Festival and Yellow Barn, and has presented the Feldenkrais Method at the Mannes and Manhattan Schools of Music, as well as at medical conferences related to musician injuries.
