2008 YOUNG ARTISTS PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS Violin Kelsey Blumenthal Kelsey Blumenthal, violin, is from Cape Elizabeth, ME where she attends Cape Elizabeth High School. She has studied violin for 14 years. She has played with the Juilliard Pre-college Orchestra and the Quartet program. Past Young Artists Program participant (2007) Francesca dePasquale Francesca dePasquale, violin, is from Narberth, PA and is home schooled. Solo appearances have been with the Philharmonic of Southern New Jersey, the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra and Ocean City Pops. Summer Festivals include Strings International, Encore and National Arts Centre Institute. Awards include first prizes in the Delaware County Symphony, Kennett Symphony, and Atonement Bach Competitions. Kate Dreyfuss Kate Dreyfuss, violin, is from Short Hills, NJ and attends the Pingry School. She had her first orchestral experience at the School for Strings in New York in 1997. She has played with the New Jersey Youth Symphony and the Pre-College Chamber Orchestra and Pre-College Symphony at Juilliard. She has attended Greenwood, the Tanglewood Institute and Point Counterpoint. Past Young Artists Program participant (2006-07) Jean Huang Jean Huang, violin, is from Lincoln, MA and is a student at Walnut Hill School. In 2007, she toured China with the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra and gave two performances at Jordan Hall. She also regularly performs chamber music at the Keiter Center at the Walnut Hill School. Alexander St. Angelo Alexander St. Angelo, violin, is from Austin, TX and studies at the North Carolina School of the Arts. He was the 2007 Strings Division Winner at the San Antonio Symphony Concerto Competition and the 2006 winner of both the Pearl Amster Concerto Competition and the Austin Young Artist Competition. Thea Talento Thea Talento, violin, is from Woodstock, VT and studies at the Sharon Academy. She has performed with the Upper Valley Strings and the Upper Valley Music Center Quartet and played first violin at the Vermont All-State Music festival. She gave a solo performance of Kreisler's Tempo di Minuetto on NPR's popular From the Top radio show. She won Recipient of Merit for Outstanding Musicianship at the New England Music Festival in 2007. Mu-Ying Tsai Mu-Ying Adina Tsai, violin, lives in Lincoln, MA and attends the Walnut Hill School. She has been a member of the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra of NEC since 2006, and toured China with them. She has won numerous prizes for string orchestra, string quartet and violin solo at the Taiwan National Music Festival, from 2004-2006 Deana Wang Deana Wang, violin, is from Santa Monica, CA and attends the Crossroads School of Arts and Sciences. In 2007, she was a semi-finalist in the Stulberg International String Competition. She was the youngest winner of the 2006-7 Beverly Hills Sunday at 2 Competition and has performed in the New York String Orchestra Seminar, ENCORE, Goldcoast, and the Walnut Hill Summer Chamber Music in France Program. Anna Wuttig Anna Wuttig, violin, from Silver Spring, MD is a student at the Holton-Arms School and in the Peabody Pre-Conservatory Violin Program. In 2007, she was selected for the National Symphony Youth Orchestra Program at the Kennedy Center, and was named concertmistress for the Maryland All-State Senior Orchestra. Past Young Artists Program participant (2005-06) Viola Emily Baker-White Emily Baker-White, viola, is from Williamstown, MA and attends Mt. Greylock Regional High School. She began piano lessons at age 3 and added viola in 4th grade. She has played at Williams College, the Levine School of Music and at Boston University Tanglewood Institute and performed with the Berkshire Symphony, All Eastern, Massachusetts All State and others. Colin Brookes Colin Brookes, viola, is from Pittsburgh, PA and attends the Juilliard School. He has played with the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony and the National Youth Orchestra Festival, and soloed with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. He has attended festivals including Casalnaggiore, Encore and YMF Debut Camp. Past Young Artists Program participant (2007). Emily Owsinski Emily Owsinski, viola, is from Lititz, PA, where she attends Warwick High School. She studies in the Peabody Preparatory Chamber Music Program and is co-principal of the Peabody Sinfonietta. Emily has spent the previous two summers at the Indiana University Summer String Academy. Besides her classical studies at Peabody, she also studies saxophone and plays in a jazz band. Charlotte Steiner Charlotte Steiner, viola, is from Millersville, MD and attends Severna Park High School. She has been principal of the Maryland Senior All-State, Baltimore Symphony Side-by-Side, and Anne Arundel Orchestras and both principal and associate principal of the Maryland Junior All-State Orchestra. She is the winner of the 2006-7 Baltimore Symphony "Young Soloist" Competition and the 2007 Greater Baltimore Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition. Cello Alex Ciccone Alexander Ciccone, cello, is from Brooklyn, NY and attends Regis High School. He has performed with the New York Youth Symphony, the Brownstone Trio, and the AAA Trio at Carnegie Hall's Weill Hall. Summer festival appearances include Sewanee, Kinhaven, Soundfest and Bard Quartet Institute. Past Young Artists Program participant (2007) Patrick McGuire Patrick McGuire, cello, is from Natick, MA and is a recent graduate of Walnut Hill School. This past year he was co-principal cellist in New England Conservatory's Youth Philharmonic Orchestra. He was a Merit Award winner at youngARTS, a finalist in the NEC School concerto competition, and won third prize with the Attaca Quartet at the Fischoff Competition. He will attend the Juilliard School in the fall. Past Young Artists Program participant (2006) Tommy Mesa Tommy Mesa, cello, is from Natick, MA where he attends the Walnut Hill School. In 2007 he played in the NEC Youth Philharmonic Orchestra and the Walnut Hill Piano Trio. In 2006, he took first place in the Alhambra Concerto Competition, was a finalist in the New World Symphony Concerto Competition, and took third place in the greater Miami Youth Symphony Concerto Competition. Stanley Moore Stanley Moore, cello, is from Elgin, MA and is a student at Elgin High School. He has appeared with YoYo Ma and The Silk Road Project, the MYA Symphony and the Moore Family Players. He was a featured soloist with the Pathos Trio at the Chicago Art Institute. Honors include first place in the Rembrandt Chamber Players, Chicago National Chamber Music, MYA Walgreens Concerto Senior Division and Illinois Cello Competions. Isaac Pastor-Chermak Isaac Pastor-Chermak, cello, is from Moscow, Idaho. He studies with Irene Sharp at the University of California, Berkeley. He is a longtime member of the Walla Walla (WA) Symphony and the Rendezvous Chamber Players, was principal of the University of Idaho Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, and was a member of the Washington-Idaho Symphony and the Anonymous Three piano trio. Isaac is an alum of the Eastern Music Festival, Chamber Music in the Mountains, and the National Cello Institute, and was the principal player of the University of Idaho Cello and Bass Choir. Past Young Artists Program participant, 2007. Justina Sullivan Justina Sullivan, cello, is from Orange, CT and attends the Juilliard School. She has performed with the New Haven Youth Symphony and the Juilliard Pre-college Chamber Ochestra, symphony, and orchestra. She is the 2006 winner of the Connecticut Alliance for Chamber Music Competition. She attended the Perlman Program in 2002-2006 and has performed with Itzhak Perlman, YoYo Ma, and Pinchas Zuckerman. Past Young Artists Program participant (2007) Piano Xiao Chen Xiao Chen, piano, is from Haikou, China and attends the Bard Conservatory of Music. She has studied piano since the age of 5. She has taken prizes at the Steinway Piano Competition and the German Music Festival. Festival appearances include Morningside Bridge and Guangzhou. Lee Dionne Lee Dionne, piano, is from Ridgefield, CT and studies at Yale University. He has been an avid chamber musician since he joined his first trio at the age of 10. At Phillips Academy, his trio, the Alisier Trio, won the junior division prize at the Fischoff Competition. He is currently a member of the Resonance Chamber Ensemble. Past Young Artists Program participant (2007) Composers Alex Amadeo Alexander Amadeo, composer, is from New Orleans, LA and is home schooled. In 2007 he received both the Fine Arts Award in composition from Interlocken and the Presidential Honors Award from the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts/Riverfront. Albert Behar Albert Behar, composer, is from Ojai, CA and attends Ventura Community College. Summer festival appearances include Tanglewood Institute's Young Artists Composition Program, Ojai Music Festival, California Arts, Interlochen and UC Davis Summer Arts. He was a 2007 finalist in the ASCAP/Seamus Student Commission for his electro-acoustic composition for violin and laptop. Past Young Artists Program participant (2006) Justin Ehrman Justin Ehrman, composer, is from Wheaton, IL where he attends Wheaton North High School. He is a member of Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and is principal cellist in the Symphony Orchestra at Merit School of Music and Wheaton North H. S. Chamber Orchestra. He plays in two quartets and a string trio. In 2008 he took first place in the Music Institute of Chicago Generation Next Young Composer's Competition. Tamzin Elliott Tamzin Elliott, composer, is from Cardif by the Sea, CA and attends Canyon Crest Academy. Tamzin was a 2007 ASCAP Finalist and has taken prizes in the State of California Composer Today Competition in both 2005 and 2006. She plays flute for the Palomar Civic Youth Symphony Orchestra. She is currently at work on a piano trio based on 5 Vermeer paintings. Past Young Artists Program participant (2007) Jan Stoneman Jan Stoneman, composer, is from Washington, DC, and is a student at Walnut Hill School. Jan played the piano for 8 years before starting to compose in 2006. He has studied composition at the Duke Ellington School for the Arts, the Boston University Tanglewood Institute Young Artists Composition Program and at Walnut Hill. He received an Honorable mention in the NYAE Young Composer's Competition. Matthew Woodard Matthew Woodard, composer, is from South Hadley, MA and is a student at the Academy Hill School and the New England Conservatory Preparatory Program. Three of his compositions were recently performed at the NEC Contemporary Festival and he has appeared on the National Public Radio’s From the Top.
