From Paris to Putney:
Give to “Les Six” and the future of chamber music In Paris, as the First World War came to a close, a group of young composers were assembled to form a new musical avant-garde. “Les Six” shared a common aesthetic, and yet what they shared more than anything else was the unique quality of each member’s compositional voice. Today Yellow Barn’s Young Artist Program spans the distance from Paris in the 1920’s to present-day Putney, VT, where each summer six new works are born. For almost three weeks six composers join the program’s instrumentalists, immersing themselves in a creative process allowing interpreter and composer to interact from the earliest moments of a work’s conception. That Yellow Barn’s “Les Six” and the performers with whom they collaborate are only 13 to 19 years of age is remarkable, for the rich variety of these musical utterances and the depth of understanding with which they are first performed leaves no doubt that this interaction must be encouraged and supported at all stages of their creative life. With a gift of $1,000 you can sponsor one of six composers and the music that they will create this summer at Yellow Barn. Through Yellow Barn, your contribution will give them an experience that will foster a lifetime of creativity, and a legacy of composition that enriches our shared musical world. “As a composer, the close interaction with performers at the Young Artists Program has been great. Learning to consider the performers’ views, even when caught up in your own compositional process, is key to writing music that people want to play. YAP has been one of the best musical experiences of my life. No other program matches it for the richness or intensity.” –Preben Antonsen, composer “I love the rapport between the instrumentalists and composers at YAP. It allows us to witness firsthand the birth of new compositions, experiencing both the highs and lows of the compositional process.” – Kate Dreyfuss, violin |
