Ariel Quartet Residency NOVEMBER 6-9 2008 Performances by the Ariel String Quartet and Roman Rabinovich, piano, and a discussion with Charles Neidich, clarinet, Seth Knopp, piano, and Adam Sheingate, political scientist. **DISCUSSION** Thursday, November 6, 6:00 p.m. Hooker-Dunham Theater Brattleboro, Vermont In the aftermath of the General Election, political scientist Adam Sheingate, Elliott Carter expert Charles Neidich, Yellow Barn Artistic Director Seth Knopp and the Ariel String Quartet considered Elliott Carter's second String Quartet and its representation of political discourse and debate. **PIANO RECITAL** Friday, November 7, 8:00 p.m. Centre Congregational Church Brattleboro, Vermont Rubinstein Competition winner Roman Rabinovich presented a recital of works by Bach, Beethoven, Ravel, Weisenberg and Chopin. **EVENING CONCERT** Sunday, November 9, 7:00 p.m. Centre Congregational Church Brattleboro, Vermont The Ariel Quartet, 2006 winner of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, performed Schubert's Rosamunde String Quartet, movements from Elliot Carter's Second String Quartet, and, with Roman Rabinovich, thePiano Quintet in E Flat Major, Op. 44 by Robert Schumann. THE PERFORMERS Ariel Quartet The Ariel Quartet, Gershon Gerchikov and Alexandra Kazovsky (violins), Sergey Tarashchansky (viola) and Amit Even-Tov (cello), was founded in 1998 while its members were studying at the Conservatory of the Jerusalem Academy of Dance and Music. In September 2004, group came to the New England Conservatory, to study with faculty including Paul Katz and Kim Kashkashian. They have appeared in summer festivals including Yellow Barn Music School & Festival, Ravinia Steans Institute, and the Perlman Music Program, among others. The Ariel Quartet won the Grand Prize in the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition in 2006. Roman Rabinovich, piano Roman Rabinovich made his solo debut with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra at age eleven. He has performed at Steinway Hall in New York, the Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow and the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. He has participated in music festivals around the world including the Salzburg Mozartraum Festival, the Verbier Festival in Switzerland and the Felicia Blumenthal Festival in Tel Aviv. Roman was a 2008 winner of the Rubinstein International Piano Competition. Charles Neidich, clarinet Charles Neidich appears regularly around the world with groups including the Saint Louis Symphony, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic, and the Juilliard, Guarneri, Brentano, American, Mendelssohn, Camina, Colorado and Cavani String Quartets. Neidich is known as a leading scholar and enthusiast of new music and has premiered works by Milton Babbitt, Elliott Carter, Edison Denisov, Helmut Lachenmann, William Schuman, Ralph Shapey, and others. He is also a conductor and educator, and is on the faculty the Juilliard and Manhattan Schools of Music and the Mannes College of Music. Adam Sheingate, political scientist Adam Sheingate, Associate Professor of Political Science at Johns Hopkins University, specializes in the politics and history of the United States. His current work examines political creativity: how individuals work through the complex ways of politics in creative or innovative ways. He is also writing a book on the development of political consulting during the twentieth century and its consequences for American democracy. Seth Knopp, piano Seth Knopp is artistic director of the Yellow Barn Music School and Festival, is founder and co-director of the Yellow Barn Young Artists Program, and is founding pianist with the Naumburg Award-winning Peabody Trio. He is a member of the Knopp-Melançon Duo and serves on the faculty at the Peabody Conservatory. YELLOW BARN FALL RESIDENCY These November concerts and discussion were a part of Yellow Barn's inaugural fall residency program, during which 2008 Festival participants, the Ariel Quartet, returned to Yellow Barn to study and perform. We were also delighted to welcome Adam Sheingate and Charles Niedich.During their residency, the performers worked at Yellow Barn's newstudios on the grounds of the Greenwood School, providing the opportunity for a detailed and intense period of rehearsal, away from the pressures of everyday life. This residency marked the beginning of our educational partnership with the Greenwood School, providing musical workshops to students at the school. |
