2021 Application for Summer Ensemble Residency

Application Instructions

Important note to those applying for Yellow Barn 2021:

Those musicians who would have participated in Yellow Barn 2020 have been invited to participate in the summer of 2021, should we be able to go forward as hoped. Although the great majority have accepted this invitation, we are welcoming applications from string quartets.

If there is no opening for your ensemble in 2021, you are still welcome to apply for a position in the event that one becomes available later in the process. If a position does not become available, you will have the option of being considered this year for the summer of 2022. If instead you decide to withdraw your application, your application fee will be refunded.

About the application process:

This year, all audition performances will be submitted by video. Applicants should submit a video recording of two contrasting works in their entirety that make very different demands on you as an ensemble.

Audition videos made after October 1, 2020 are greatly preferred. However, due to the the difficulties we are all experiencing, 1 of the 2 video performances may be a recording from anytime after November 1, 2019. At least 1 work must be recorded after October 1, 2020.

Application Deadlines

The deadline for submitting your application is January 15, 2021.
The deadline for submitting your accompanying audition videos is February 1, 2021.

Fees

Application Fee: $120 (non-refundable and due with application)

All participants receive a full scholarship to cover tuition, room, and board.

Auditions

Ensembles should be full-time groups who have been playing together for a minimum of one year, and who have the shared desire to establish themselves as a lasting entity. (If you are applying as an individual, please use our Application for Individual Musicians.)

Audition Requirements

Prepare two contrasting works in their entirety that make very different demands on you as an ensemble. Questions regarding audition repertoire are welcome.

Letters of Recommendation

Please submit two letters of recommendation from teachers who know your ensemble's playing well. They (or you) may send the letters directly to melody@yellowbarn.org. Please include your ensemble's name in the subject line.
