Application Instructions

Application Deadlines
Materials must be received by the following dates:

Live auditions (strongly recommended):
Applications for European auditions: January 13, 2020—New deadline
Applications for U.S. auditions: January 15, 2020

Videotaped auditions (only if a live audition is not possible): January 31, 2020
Video audition tapes must be recorded after October 1, 2019. Earlier recordings will not be accepted.

Late and walk-in applications will be accommodated where possible.

Application Fee: $60 (non-refundable and due with application)
Tuition, Room, and Board: $2,750 (due in full by April 15, 2020, and non-refundable after May 1, 2020)

Scholarship assistance is available based on financial need. Those wishing to apply for assistance will be able to do so after application results are announced.
Strings, woodwinds, pianists, percussionists, and composers are invited to apply. Live auditions are strongly recommended for instrumentalists. Only in cases where live auditions are impossible, applicants may audition with unedited video files. CDs will not be accepted.
Please note: Musicians must be at least 13 years old, and no older than 20 years old, on June 14, 2020.
Audition Requirements
You must bring your own pianist unless you are performing only unaccompanied works. Auditions are typically 15 minutes in length but may vary from audition to audition.
Strings, Woodwinds, and Piano: Prepare two movements total: one substantial movement each from two contrasting works that make different demands on you as a player. 
Percussion: Please be prepared to play one work (or movements as indicated) from each of the following categories:
  • Any movement from one of Johann Sebastian Bach's Cello Suites, Violin Sonatas, or Partitas
  • Keyboard Percussion:
    George Hamilton: Green Xylophone Rags
    Keiko Abe: Michi; Variations on Japanese Children's Songs; Wind in the Bamboo Grove; or another Abe work of your choice
    Akira Miyoshi: Conversation
    Ross Edwards: Marimba Dances (at least one of the 3 movements)
    Eric Sammut: Four Rotations (at least two of the 4 movements)
    Paul Smadbeck: Rhythm Song
    (or equivalent)
  • Snare drum or multi-percussion:
    Jacques Délécluse: Douze Etudes (at least two of the etudes)
    Anthony Cirone: Portraits in Rhythm (at least two of the etudes)
    Rick Tagawa: Inspirations Diabolique
    Iannis Xenakis: Rebonds a or Rebonds b
    Frederic Rzewski: To the Earth
    Dave Hollinden: Cold Pressed
    (or equivalent)
Composers: Please submit three recent scores, preferably with recordings.

Your most up-to-date list of chamber music studied and/or performed. Label each category clearly and include your name.

Letters of Recommendation
Please submit two letters of recommendation from teachers who know your playing well. They (or you) may send the letters directly to melody@yellowbarn.org. Please include your full name and instrument in the subject line.

Live auditions are strongly recommended.  Recorded auditions should be submitted only when live auditions are impossible.

After clicking “Submit” you will be asked to pay your $60 application fee by PayPal. You may pay with a PayPal account or with a credit card. If you prefer to pay by check, please write a check payable to “Yellow Barn”, and on the memo line include your name as it appears on your application.
