Sam Seyong Um

Sam Seyong Um, percussion (Rockville, MD), specializes in solo and chamber percussion repertoires. He has been featured in many music series and festivals performing solo and chamber repertoire. Sam was a featured artist for the Sunset Music Series, Essex Winter Music Series, and Norfolk Outreach Program, among others. As the winner of the Marimba Concerto Competition at the Eastman School of Music, Sam performed the Concerto for Marimba and Strings by Emmanuel Sejourne at the Eastman School of Music. In addition, He was awarded 3rd place at the 2012 PAS NYU Marimba Competition. Sam is also a member of The Collective, a percussion group which consists of students from the Yale Percussion Group directed by Robert van Sice. Sam premiered “Aria” by Christopher Theofanidis and “Prelude and Chorale” by Hannah Lash in 2016. Sam also appeared on Yellow Barn Music Haul in September 2016 on its tour of the Boston Area. Sam earned an M.M. degree at the Yale School of Music with Havemeyer Scholarship under Robert van Sice. He earned his B.M. degree at the Eastman School of Music with the Howard Hanson Scholarship and under Michael Burritt. At Eastman, he was honored with the prestigious Performer’s Certificate.
