Rowan Bauman Swain

Rowan Bauman Swain, viola (Charlotte, VT), is currently an undergraduate at Bard College Conservatory of Music, where she studies with Molly Carr and Steven Tenenbom. Previously, she attended the Juilliard School, Pre-College Division for seven years, where her primary teachers included Heidi Castleman, Hsin-Yun Huang, and Carol Rodland. Rowan made her concerto debut with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra in 2015. During the 2019-2020 season she soloed with the Vermont Youth Orchestra and was also the winner of the organization’s annual Hermance Prize. That same year, she had the honor of performing the quintet "Famn d’Ayiti" with Grammy-nominated composer Nathalie Joachim at Alice Tully Hall in New York City. For four summers, Rowan attended the Perlman Music Program Summer Music School. She has also participated in PMP’s travel residencies in Sarasota, Florida, and Tel Aviv, Israel. Rowan plays on a 1977 Carleen Hutchins viola generously on loan through the Virtu Foundation. In addition to her music degree, she is pursuing a BA in Classics as a student in Bard’s dual degree program.
