Joseph Karz

Joey Karz, composition (Los Angeles, CA), became interested in composition in middle school while attending Interlochen Arts Camp for piano performance. Two years after showcasing his first original work, he became a fellow in the L.A. Philharmonic Nancy and Barry Sanders Composer Fellowship Program, where his pieces were performed by ensembles including the L.A. Master Chorale, the Lyris Quartet, and the string instrumentalists of the LA Philharmonic. Joey studied piano and composition at the Colburn School throughout high school, and during this time he also attended Boston University Tanglewood Institute for composition. As a senior in high school, Joey was selected as a 2021 YoungArts finalist in classical music, and was a semifinalist for the 2021 United States Presidential Scholar in the Arts Award. Later that year, he was featured on NPR’s “From the Top” radio series, where his piece “Binding Disunity” premiered live. Joey is currently a freshman at the University of Michigan, where he is studying classical music composition in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance.
