Jonah Kernis

Jonah Kernis, cello (New York, NY), currently studies with Natasha Brofsky in the Juilliard Pre-College program, while attending the Professional Children’s School. He previously studied with Yari Bond at the Special Music School. Jonah has won Kaufman Music Center’s Concerto Competition and subsequently performed the Shostakovich Cello Concerto in Merkin Hall. He also won First Place in his age category at theVivo International Music Competition, and placed in the Camerata Artists International Competition. Most recently, he was a finalist in the Lyra Music Competition. He recently traveled to China and performed a cello and piano duo with his father, composer Aaron Jay Kernis, and premiered a new composition for solo cello by Mario Davidovsky at Greenwich House Music School. Jonah was chosen to play in a masterclass given by renowned cellist Steven Isserlis in 2015, and is also participating in the NYYS Chamber Music program as cellist of the HaWK Piano Trio. The HaWK Trio was recently a finalist in the Junior Division for the 2020 Coltman Competition and a semi-finalist in the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition.
