Jonah Kernis

Jonah Kernis, cello (New York, NY), studies at the Juilliard School Pre-College Division with Natasha Brofsky and attends the Professional Children’s School. Previously, he studied with Yari Bond for nine years and attended the Special Music School Lower School and Middle School. As a soloist, he has performed in major venues such as Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall and Merkin Concert Hall in New York City. Jonah won First Place (Gold Prize) at the 2017-18 Vivo International Music Competition. He also won the Kaufman Music Center Concerto Competition and subsequently performed the Shostakovich Cello Concerto in Merkin Hall in February of 2018. Jonah recently performed the music of Aaron Jay Kernis with the composer (his father) in Shanghai, China. Jonah participates in the New York Youth Symphony Chamber Music Program as the cellist of the HaWK Piano Trio. The HaWK Trio was twice invited to perform at Lincoln Center's Rose Studio and has won several competitions, including first place in the 2018 International Grande Music Competition. Aside from his cello studies, Jonah enjoys listening to jazz music and playing video games. Previous Yellow Barn Young Artists Musician participant (2018)
