James Kang

James Kang, viola (Lawrenceville, GA), is currently a senior at Collins Hill High School in Suwanee, GA. James began his viola studies at age 9 and decided to focus on them at age 14. James has been a member of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra for three years, acting as Co-Principal Violist for two years. He has also been a member of the Georgia All-State Orchestra for 6 years, acting as Principal Violist in 2015 and 2017. James has won the Bach Competition in Georgia, received first prize in the J. Kimball Harriman Scholarship for two years, and was awarded Honorable Mention in the ASTA National Solo Competition in 2016. He has attended summer programs including the National Youth Orchestra of the USA, Interlochen Summer Arts Camp, Franklin Pond Chamber Music, and Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's Side-by-Side program. At Interlochen, he received the Emerson scholarship, which included a full tuition waiver, and was a finalist of the Interlochen Concerto Competition. James currently has 7 students and he currently studies with Dr. Marilyn Seelman. He has participated in master classes with Jennifer Stumm, Daniel Reinker, and Lisa Steltenpohl. James will be attending the Juilliard School with a Kovner Fellowship starting this fall.
