Gabriel Crist

Gabriel Crist, piano (Durham, NC), is a pianist and composer. This year, he was awarded first place in the East Carolina University Young Artist Piano Competition and in the North Carolina Division of the Music Teachers National Association Piano Competition. Prior awards include first place in the 2015 North Carolina Symphony Kathleen Price and Joseph M. Bryan Youth Concerto Competition. In addition to his accomplishments on the piano, Crist is a prolific composer. This past spring, his Shine and Shade was premiered by the North Carolina Youth Wind Ensemble as a commissioned work to celebrate its inaugural year. He has been selected to participate in the 2019 MATA Jr. Festival, which will conclude with a performance of his new quartet by members of the Face the Music ensemble this November. In 2017, Crist received honorable mention in the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers’ Morton Gould Young Composer’s Award Competition for his piano piece Epigrams. Crist has participated in orchestral and chamber music programs as a pianist, cellist, and violinist with the Duke University String School, the Mallarmé Youth Chamber Orchestra, and at Kinhaven Music School. He studies with Mimi Solomon and Stephen Jaffe.
