Daniel Chong

Daniel Chong, violin (Somerville, MA), has garnered wide recognition for his performances in such venues as Carnegie Hall, Library of Congress, Musikverein, Concertgebouw, and Wigmore Hall as the founding first violinist of the Parker Quartet. The quartet is currently the Blodgett Quartet-in-Residence at Harvard University where they serve on the faculty of the Department of Music. In addition, the Grammy award-winning violinist is a member of the East Coast Chamber Orchestra and Ensemble DITTO, and has received several awards such as the 2009-2011 Cleveland Quartet Award and top prizes at the Concert Artists Guild Competition, Young Concert Artists International Auditions, and the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition. His recordings with the quartet can be heard on the Zig-Zag Territoires, Albany Records, Innova Records, and Naxos labels. Daniel has performed at several major music festivals including the Marlboro Music Festival, Mostly Mozart, Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival, and the Perigord Noir Music Festival. He has given masterclasses internationally, has taught for El Sistema in Venezuela and has held teaching and performance residencies at the University of Minnesota and University of South Carolina. Other artists that he has collaborated with include David Soyer, Kim Kashkashian, Shai Wosner, Roger Tapping, and members of the Cleveland and Tokyo Quartets. He has premiered new works by György Kurtág, Lera Auerbach, Jeremy Gill, and Augusta Read Thomas. Originally from Southern California, Daniel’s major teachers were Robert Lipsett, Donald Weilerstein, and Kim Kashkashian. He studied at the Curtis Institute of Music, Cleveland Institute of Music, and the New England Conservatory where he received his B.M. and M.M. Other musical mentors that continue to influence him are Rainer Schmidt and Helmut Lachenmann. He currently resides in Somerville with his wife Jessica, their son Cole, and their vizsla, affectionately named Bodie.
