RECENT YOUNG ARTISTS PROGRAM ALUMNI Dae Hee Ahn, violin Dae Hee Ahn, violin, was born in Yeosu, South Korea and currently resides in Ridgewood, NJ. She has been playing violin since age 5 and attends Juilliard Pre-College. She has appeared as soloist with the Academic Symphony Orchestra and the High Mountain Symphony and has appeared in recitals at Weill Recital Hall, Steinway Hall, CAMI Hall, and Paul Recital Hall at the Juilliard School. Dae Hee is the recipient of the Stecher & Horowitz Scholarship Foundation Award, a Mae & Fletcher Fish Scholarship and several Juilliard Pre-College Scholarships. Alex Amadeo, composer Alexander Amadeo, composer, is from New Orleans, LA and is home schooled. In 2007 he received both the Fine Arts Award in composition from Interlocken and the Presidential Honors Award from the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts/Riverfront. Past Young Artists Program participant (2008). Preben Antonsen, composer Preben Antonsen, composer, is from Berkeley, CA. He has been featured on NPR's "From the Top" and has been commissioned by the San Francisco Youth Symphony Orchestra with a premiere in March, 2009. A work for piano by Preben, who is also a pianist, will be premiered in January by Cal Performers, and played again in New York City in March as a part of pianist Sarah Cahill's project, "Envisioning Peace". He has received Honorable Mentions in the Davison Fellowship Program and the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts youth program. Past Young Artists Program participant (2007, 2009). Since she began playing at age 4, she has attended Tanglewood, Apple Hill, and the Ogontz Institute. She was winner of the Windham Orchestra Concerto Competition in 2007, concertmistress of the New Hampshire All-State Orchestra in 2007, and was accepted into the Hartt School's Performers Certificate Program for 2007-2009. Greylock Regional High School. She began piano lessons at age 3 and added viola in 4th grade. She has played at Williams College, the Levine School of Music and at Boston University Tanglewood Institute and performed with the Berkshire Symphony, All Eastern, Massachusetts All State and others. Past Young Artists Program participant (2008). Albert Behar, composer Albert Sackner Behar, composer, is from San Francisco, CA. He has been composing for eight years and has played the piano for twelve years. He recently created a solo electronic album, "Be Hear Now" and has interned with sound sculptor, Trimpin, focusing on electronics and programming. In 2006, Albert was commissioned by Trimpin to write Composition for Coloninpurple for his sound sculpture Coloninpurple at the Ojai Museum. He participated in the Ojai Music festival in 2007 and was intern to the producer in 2008. Albert was a California Arts Scholar in 2007. Eva Belmont, piano Eva Belmont, piano (Acton, Mass.), is a student at Buckingham Browne & Nichols School and a member of the New England Conservatory Preparatory Division. In 2007 she won the Concord Orchestra Concerto Competition and was a finalist in the NEC Preparatory Concerto Competition (Division C). David Bloom, composer David Bloom, composer, lives in Birmingham, AL, and attends the Bard College Conservatory. He began composing eight years ago. David has attended the New York Summer Music Festival, the Illinois Wesleyan Summer Composition Institute, and the Bard Conductors' Institute. Kelsey Blumenthal, violin Kelsey Blumenthal, violin, is from Cape Elizabeth, ME where she attends Cape Elizabeth High School. She has studied violin for 14 years. She has played with the Juilliard Pre-college Orchestra and the Quartet program. Past Young Artists Program participant (2007-2008) Colin Brookes, viola Colin Brookes, viola, is from Pittsburgh, PA and attends the Juilliard School. He has played with the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony and the National Youth Orchestra Festival, and soloed with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Maia Cabeza, violin Maia Cabeza, violin, is from Chapel Hill, NC, and is presently attending the Curtis Institute of Music. She has attended the Aspen Festival, the Encore School for Strings and the Greenwood Music Camp. She was a semi-finalist in the International Menuhin Violin Competition, received a Laureate Second Place in the Sphinx Competition in 2007, and won first place in the North Carolina Symphony Youth Competition in 2006. She has been a soloist with the Reno Philharmonic and at Carnegie Hall with the Sphinx Chamber Orchestra. Past Young Artists Program participant (2009). Benjamin Carson, violin Benjamin Carson, violin (Holliston, Mass.), is currently a student at Walnut Hill School. He has toured Portugal, Spain, Latvia, Estonia, and Russia with the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchesrta, where he served as both concertmaster and principal second violin. Xiao Chen, piano Xiao Chen, piano, is from Haikou, China and attends the Bard Conservatory of Music. She has studied piano since the age of 5. Past Young Artists Program participant (2007-2008) Matthew Cmiel, composer Matthew Cmiel, composer (San Francisco, Calif.), is a student at the San Francisco School of the Arts. His works have been performed by the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra, the Golden Gate Philharmonic, and the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra. He has won numerous awards for his performances on guitar, including the ASTA soloist award. Matt is a past participant of the Summer Music West Composition Program. Past Young Artists Program participant (2005-2006). Marie Daniels, viola Marie Daniels, viola, is from The Woodlands, TX, and has been studying viola for 8 years. She has performed with the Texas All-State Symphony Orchestra and Texas State Solo and Ensemble since 2006, and the Houston Youth Symphony since 2004. Cecille de Laurentis, cello Cecille de Laurentis, cello, is from Somerset, NJ, and attends Rutgers Preparatory School. She began studying the cello 8 years ago, and has participated in the Garden State Music Festival, Tanglewood's Young Artists Orchestra Program, where she was principal cellist. She is now principal of the Manhattan School of Music Pre-College Philharmonic. She was a winner of the New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra Young Artists Competition, the Diana Danese Flagello Scholarship Award, and a Boston University Tanglewood Institute scholarship. Solo appearances have been with the Philharmonic of Southern New Jersey, the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra and Ocean City Pops. Lee Dionne, piano Lee Dionne, piano, is from Ridgefield, CT and studies at Yale University. He has been an avid chamber musician since he joined his first trio at the age of 10. At Phillips Academy, his trio, the Alisier Trio, won the junior division prize at the Fischoff Competition. He is currently a member of the Resonance Chamber Ensemble. Past Young Artists Program participant (2007-2008). Kate Dreyfuss, violin Kate Dreyfuss, violin, is from Short Hills, NJ, and attends The Pingry School and Juilliard Pre-College. She has studied violin since the age of 3. Kate has trained at the Colorado Suzuki Institute at Snowmass, the Advanced Suzuki Institute at Stanford, the School for Strings, Point-Counterpoint, Greenwood Music Camp, Tanglewood, the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival and the Interharmony International Music Festival in Sulzbach-Rosenburg, Germany. She has been concertmistress for the Juilliard Pre-College Symphony and was principal second violin in 2008-09. Past Young Artists Program participant (2006-2009). Justin Ehrman, composer Justin Ehrman, composer, is from Wheaton, IL where he attends Wheaton North High School. He is a member of Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and is principal cellist in the Symphony Orchestra at Merit School of Music and Wheaton North H. S. Chamber Orchestra. He plays in two quartets and a string trio. In 2008 he took first place in the Music Institute of Chicago Generation Next Young Composer's Competition. Past Young Artists Program participant (2008). Tamzin Elliott, composer Tamzin Ferré Elliot, composer, will be a junior at San Dieguito Academy in San Diego, CA this fall. She began to compose at the age of nine, and has also studied piano, music theory, flute, and harp. She won second place in the MTAC Composed Today Competition in 2005, and first place in 2006. Tamzin was recently honored for her "Chanson D'Insomnie," a duo for flute and piano. She has also been a finalist in the ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Awards Competition for the last three years. She studies composition with, Pulitzer Prize winner Rodger Reynolds. Past Young Artists Program participant (2007-2009). He has been studying violin for fourteen years and has played with Music@Menlo, the Aspen Festival, the Heifetz Institute, and the Great Wall International Music Academy. He is a member of the San Francisco Youth Symphony and performs with the San Francisco Conservatory Preparatory Program. He has been a member of the Starling Chamber Orchestra and worked with the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. Past Young Artists Program participant (2009). Stephen Feigenbaum, composer Stephen Feigenbaum, composer (Winchester, Mass.), is a student at Winchester High School and New England Conservatory Preparatory School. In 2006 he was the First Place Winner of the Pikes Peak Young Composer Competition, and is a previous winner of the ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Young Composer Competition. Joseph Gotoff, cello Joseph Gotoff, cello (Lewisburg, Penn.), is a student at both Lewisburg Area High School and Temple Music Prep. He is the sole high school member of the Bucknell Symphony Orchestra and is co-founder of the Turbino Piano Trio. In 2006 he won First Place in the Williamsport Symphony Young Artist's Concerto Competition and performed with the Williamsport Symphony. Laura is a four-time winner of the Southwestern Youth Music Festival and two-time Gold Medallist of the Bach Complete Works Competition. Christopher Hsing, cello Christopher Hsing, cello, is from Potomac, MD. He has been studying cello for seven years, is co-principal of both the American Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Maryland All-State Senior Orchestra. He is a three-time first place winner of the Maryland State Music Teachers Association's Chamber Music Competition, and recently performed alongside the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center. Lisa Kudo, clarinet Lisa Kudo, clarinet (Northbrook, Ill.), began studying her instrument five years ago at the Stanley Davis Music Institute of Chicago and has played with numerous orchestras including the Midwest Young Artists Symphony, and the Chicago Youth Concert Orchestra. Lisa is the 2007 winner of the Glenbrook Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition.. She is a past participant of the Midwest Young Artists Summer Music Festival. She attends the Curtis Institute of Music and holds a diploma from the Korean National University of Art Preparatory Program. Jeoung-Yin was a Youth Audition Finalist with the Lansdowne Symphony Orchestra (2007) and has attended the Saito Kinen Music Festival in Japan (2005). Christel Lee, violin Christel Lee, violin (Coquitiam, Canada), has performed throughout the U.S.,Canada, England, and Korea, including a solo recital in Steinway Hall. Vieen Leung, violin Vieen Leung, violin (Wan Chai, Hong Kong), is a student at Peabody Conservatory, where she serves as assistant concertmaster of the Concert Orchestra. She was a member of the Hong Kong Children's Symphony Orchestra for seven years, during three of which she was concertmaster. Vieen won First Place in the 6th National Violin Competition in China. Patrick McGuire, cello Patrick McGuire, cello, is from Natick, MA and is a recent graduate of Walnut Hill School. This past year he was co-principal cellist in New England Conservatory's Youth Philharmonic Orchestra. He was a Merit Award winner at youngARTS, a finalist in the NEC School concerto competition, and won third prize with the Attaca Quartet at the Fischoff Competition. He will attend the Juilliard School in the fall. In 2006, he took first place in the Alhambra Concerto Competition, was a finalist in the New World Symphony Concerto Competition, and took third place in the greater Miami Youth Symphony Concerto Competition. He has appeared with YoYo Ma and The Silk Road Project, the MYA Symphony and the Moore Family Players. He was a featured soloist with the Pathos Trio at the Chicago Art Institute. She recently graduated from Warwick High School and has been studying at and playing chamber music at the Peabody Preparatory Program since 1998. Emily has been a Hershey Symphony Young Artist Competition Finalist (2008), second place winner of the FMMC High School Competition for Strings, and first place Viola Concerto Winner at the Indiana University String Academy. She is the winner of the 2004, 2005, 2007, and 2008 Tacoma Young Artist Concerto Competitions, and is a Seattle Symphony Gold Medalist. In 2008, Joanna received a Quintet Mortgage Scholarship, UniBank Hope Scholarship, Washington Korean Women's Association Scholarship, Tacoma Youth Symphony Association Scholarship, and Alice Winston Carter Scholarship. Past Young Artists Program participant (2009). Isaac Pastor-Chermak, cello Isaac Pastor-Chermak, cello, is from Moscow, Idaho. He studies with Irene Sharp at the University of California, Berkeley. He is a longtime member of the Walla Walla (WA) Symphony and the Rendezvous Chamber Players, was principal of the University of Idaho Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, and was a member of the Washington-Idaho Symphony and the Anonymous Three piano trio. Isaac is an alum of the Eastern Music Festival, Chamber Music in the Mountains, and the National Cello Institute, and was the principal player of the University of Idaho Cello and Bass Choir. He started playing 10 years ago, and has attended the Indiana University String Academy, Meadowmount, and other programs. He was principal with the Milwaukee Youth Symphony. Samuel was the 2006 winner of the Young Artists Competition of the Racine Symphony Orchestra, and 2007 winner of the State Junior Division of the American String Teachers' Association Competition. Rachel Ruggles, violin Rachel Ruggles, violin (Berkeley, Calif.), is enrolled in the San Francisco Conservatory Preparatory Program and plays with the Berkeley High School Orchestra and San Domenico Virtuoso Orchestra da Camera. Among other honors, Mika has received an Outstanding Performance Award at regional finals of the Tokyo Classical Music Competition (2006, 2007) and was a finalist at the Japan National Finals (2006, 2007). Tessa Seymour, cello Tessa Seymour, cello, is from Berkeley, CA and has been studying cello for nine years. She is a member of the San Francisco Youth Symphony Orchestra and the winner of their Concerto Competition (2007). She is a member of the Luna Trio, which has performed on NPR's "From the Top". She has performed at the Beijing Conservatory in China and as a concerto soloist with the Stockton Chamber Orchestra, and the Modesto and Prometheus Symphonies. Tessa is a recipient of a Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award and several first prizes from the American String Teacher's Association. Elicia Silverstein, violin Elicia Silverstein, violin (Short Hills, N.J.), is a student at Professional Children's School and the Pre-College Program at Juilliard. Alexander St. Angelo, violin Alexander St. Angelo, violin, is from Austin, TX and studies at the North Carolina School of the Arts. He was the 2007 Strings Division Winner at the San Antonio Symphony Concerto Competition and the 2006 winner of both the Pearl Amster Concerto Competition and the Austin Young Artist Competition. Past Young Artists Program participant (2008). Gabriella Smith, composer Gabriella Smith, composer, is from El Cerrito, CA. She has been playing violin and piano in chamber ensembles and orchestras since she was five years old. She started composing at age eight. In 2006 her orchestral piece "Dances of the Isuan Interval" was selected by the Berkeley Symphony for performance, and this November her Quartet for Violin, Piano, and Percussion (2008) was a winner of the Adorno Ensemble of San Francisco's competition for their ScoreXchange program. Charlotte Steiner, viola Charlotte Steiner, viola, is from Millersville, MD and attends Severna Park High School. She has been playing the viola for ten years and has been principal with the Maryland Senior All-State Orchestra. She is principal of the Baltimore Symphony Side-by-Side Orchestra and a participant in the Peabody Preparatory Program. Charlotte was a winner of the Baltimore Symphony's Youth Soloist Competition, has performed with the Greater Baltimore Youth Orchestra as the winner of their concerto competition, and with the Landon Symphonette as a finalist in their solo string competition. She has received a Maryland Distinguished Scholar in the Arts award. Past Young Artists Program participant (2008-2009). Recipient, 2009 Gennifer Sussman Scholarship to attend Yellow Barn's Young Artists Program. Jan Stoneman, composer Jan Stoneman, composer, is from Washington, DC, and is a student at Walnut Hill School. Jan played the piano for 8 years before starting to compose in 2006. He has studied composition at the Duke Ellington School for the Arts, the Boston University Tanglewood Institute Young Artists Composition Program and at Walnut Hill. He received an Honorable mention in the NYAE Young Composer's Competition. Past Young Artists Program participant (2008). Justina Sullivan, cello Justina Sullivan, cello, is from Orange, CT and attends the Juilliard School. She has performed with the New Haven Youth Symphony and the Juilliard Pre-college Chamber Ochestra, symphony, and orchestra. She is the 2006 winner of the Connecticut Alliance for Chamber Music Competition. She attended the Perlman Program in 2002-2006 and has performed with Itzhak Perlman, YoYo Ma, and Pinchas Zuckerman. Past Young Artists Program participant (2007-2008). Thea Talento, violin Thea Talento, violin, is from Woodstock, VT and studies at the Sharon Academy. She has performed with the Upper Valley Strings and the Upper Valley Music Center Quartet and played first violin at the Vermont All-State Music festival. She gave a solo performance of Kreisler's Tempo di Minuetto on NPR's popular From the Top radio show. She won Recipient of Merit for Outstanding Musicianship at the New England Music Festival in 2007. Past Young Artits Program participant (2008). Hannah Thomas-Hollands, cello Hannah Thomas-Hollands, cello, of McLean, VA, attends the Cleveland Institute of Music. She has participated in orchestras since the age of eight and chamber groups since age 11. In 2007 she received an Emerson Scholarship to study at the Interlochen Arts Camp, and an Institutional Scholarship to the Cleveland Institute of Music cellist for the orchestra. She was a 2003 recipient of a Music Scholarship from the Women's Club of McLean, VA. Past Young Artists Program participant (2009). Mu-Ying Tsai, violin Mu-Ying Adina Tsai, violin, lives in Lincoln, MA and attends the Walnut Hill School. She has been a member of the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra of NEC since 2006, and toured China with them. She has won numerous prizes for string orchestra, string quartet and violin solo at the Taiwan National Music Festival, from 2004-2006. Past Young Artists Program participant (2008). Mayumi Tsuchida, piano Mayumi Tsuchida, piano, is from Mill Valley, CA and has been playing the piano for fourteen years. She studies at the Preparatory Division at the San Francisco Conservatory Preparatory Program. Mayumi is a founder of the Luna Trio, which has been featured on NPR's "From the Top" and has been written about in Teen Strings Magazine (2007). As a soloist she has won numerous honors including first prizes in the Ross Mckee Piano Competition, the University of the Pacific Henry and Carol Zeiter Piano Competition, and the 10th Annual San Francisco Chopin Competition for Young Pianists. Past Young Artists Program participant (2009). Deana Wang, violin Deana Wang, violin, is from Santa Monica, CA and attends the Crossroads School of Arts and Sciences. In 2007, she was a semi-finalist in the Stulberg International String Competition. She was the youngest winner of the 2006-7 Beverly Hills Sunday at 2 Competition and has performed in the New York String Orchestra Seminar, ENCORE, Goldcoast, and the Walnut Hill Summer Chamber Music in France Program. Past Young Artists Program participant (2008). Zsche Chuang Rimbo Wong, viola Zsche Chuang Rimbo Wong, viola, is from Hong Kong and just graduated from the Idyllwild Arts Academy. She will attend the Cleveland Institute of Music this fall. She was the youngest member and principal of the touring Asian Youth Orchestra. Rimbo was the winner of the Redlands Bowl Young Artists Competition and a finalist for the 69th Steinway and Sons International Youth Piano Competition in the Hong Kong and Macau region. She holds prizes in viola and piano from the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. Past Young Artists Program participant (2009). Matthew Woodard, composer Matthew Woodard, composer, is from South Hadley, MA, and has been composing since the age of five. He has attended the New England Conservatory Preparatory School for the past two years. Matthew has participated in the "From the Top" Young Composers' Project, and his works have been featured on NPR's "From the Top" radio and television shows. Anna Wuttig, violin Anna Wuttig, violin, is from Silver Spring, MD and has been studying violin for 14 years. She is a winner of the Washington Post Music and Dance Scholarship, a finalist in the Maryland State Distinguished Scholars in Talent Program, and recipient of the first prize for the "Jugend Musiziert" in Germany. She has performed in the National Youth Symphony Orchestra, in the Princeton University Orchestra, the American Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, and others. She attends Princeton University, but will take a leave to attend the New England Conservatory this fall. Past Young Artists Program participant (2005-2006, 2008-2009). Recipient, 2009 Sally Rubin and Arthur Applbaum Scholarship to attend Yellow Barn's Young Artists Program. William Zuckerman, composer William Zuckerman, composer (Franklin, Mass.), attends Franklin High School. His compositions have been performed at Boston University, New England Conservatory, and Walnut Hill. He has received awards from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts and was a finalist in the Indiana University's Scholarship Competition.
